And the Lord spoke to Moses after the death of Aaron's two sons, when they drew near before the Lord, and they died. (Vayikra 16:1)
If one is in pain and sheds tears on Yom Kippor because of the death of the two son's of Aaron their sins are forgiven and their children will not die during their lifetimes. (Zohar & Arizal) How can one grieve over a personal event that occurred so long ago? What meaning does it have for use today and why should we care? Rav Chaim Shmulevitz explains that spiritual energy and level that could have been brought into the world during the lives of the son's of Aaron was lost at their deaths and can never be replaced. Each great person imparts their greatness into the world and spiritually effects the entire universe. Rashi in Melachim 2-2:16 states: Since the day when Eliyahu was hidden, the holy spirit departed from the prophets, and the holy spirit was no longer widespread throughout Israel. We should not underestimate the power of our actions. Each of us affects the entire community and in turn the world. Application: Which character trait can I improve to "make the world a better place"? Give 10 quick answers to the following sentence stem: If I felt my actions really made a difference, I would... If I knew I have a special purpose that only I can fulfill, I would... If not now, when? |
