Hashem spoke to Moses, saying, Speak to the Children of Israel and say to them: A man or a woman who shall set [himself] apart by taking a nazirite vow to set [himself] apart to Hashem; from wine and hard drink shall he abstain etc (Bamidbar 6/1-3).
Rashi quotes the Chazal; "Why was the passage of nazir put adjacent to the passage of sotah?-To tell you that anyone who sees a sotah in her state of degradation [see Rashi 5/18] should take upon himself to abstain from wine [by becoming a nazir,] for wine leads to adultry" (Sotah 2a). On first glance, it's difficult to understand why someone who happens to witness the disgracing of a suspected adultress should be obligated to abstain from wine by becoming a nazir, even though he may never have been guilty of sinning. There is a saying attributed to the Ba'al Shem Tov; that everything a Jew hears or sees are all hints that Hashem sends to guide and direct us in His service. Therefore if one has the misfortune to see the degradation of one who acted in an immodest manner that caused her to be suspected of adultry, this is a sign from Heaven that the spectator is in a state that given the oppurtunity will likewise commit adultry. A similar idea can be found in Avot(6/3); Rabbi Yehoshua ben Levi said; Everyday a voice [bat-kol]goes forth from Har Chorev [Sinai] and anounces "Woe is to those who despise the Torah etc." Does anyone really hear this voice? The truth is that it's actually an inner voice that we are priviliged to hear from time to time. This is the holy spark of our inner soul being ignited and filling us with an overwhelming desire to devote ourselves to a holy and pure life dedicated to Hashems Torah. The Rambam writes in Halachos Issurei Beah (ch.22/21) that sinful thoughts can only found in those whose hearts are devoid of wisdom [Torah]. The forthcoming holiday of Shavuot is an oppurtunity to renew our commitment to Torah, and thereby acquire year-round protection from the Yetzer Harah, who constantly tries to pull us away from Hashem and His Torah. |

notes on nasoh
The opinions vary as to why the nazir brings a sin offering. The majority of commentators say it is because he denied himself that which is permitted. The Ramban says that because he reached such a high level of kedusha that he brings a sin offering because he is returning to regular life. The sifre say that peace is so desired that we seek peace with our enemies even in time of war, e.g. when you approach a city which you must take for military reasons, you give them the choice of fighting or leaving, Moshe sends peace emissaries to Og and Sichon as does Yiptach to his enemies.
