Parshas Eikev
"Son, with enough practice and perseverance, you could become as good as your hero." Moshe said to Bnai Yisrael "What does G-d want from you? Just to fear Him..." (Divorim 10:12) The Gemara (Brochos 33b) asks "Is the fear of G-d a little thing ?" (i.e. Moshe said "JUST to fear G-d") The Gemara answers "For Moshe it was a small thing." Rav Yechezkel Sarna z"tl said that the Torah records the repetition of the commandment to fear G-d in this manner, to teach us that we can all reach this level of Moshe !! The Rambam (Laws of Repentance 5:2) says "Everyone can become as righteous as Moshe." Have a great Shabbos !! |

Dear Rabbi Flom,
You said that we can all reach the level of righteousness of Moshe. Isn't the level of prophecy based primarily on righteousness- yet the Torah itself tells us that no one can reach the level of Moshe's prophecy? Thank you. |

Dear Tzivy,
The Rambam in the 7th chapter of the Shemona Perakim (the Rambam's introduction to Pirkei Avos)says when Moshe asked to "see" more of Hashem's ways, Hashem said no one can see more while he's alive (Shemos-Ki Sisa 33:18-20). Then, the Rambam says, that Hashem gave Moshe a present and let him see what is normally impossible for a human to see. It turns out, according to this, that someone could theoretically reach Moshe's level of intellectual and spiritual greatness, yet he wouldn't be the same navi (prophet)as Moshe, because G-d declared (Divorim--Zos Habrocha 34:10) that there will never be another prophet like Moshe--because He will never give this gift to anyone else. Thanks. Rabbi Flom |
