How could the Jews, shortly after seeing the miracles of the ten
plagues and the splitting of the sea, suddenly worship an idol, the golden
calf? (Shemos 32:1-6). Rav Chaim Shmulevitz zt"l, the Mirrer RoshYeshiva,
explained that when a person is in a state of emotional turmoil, he is
vulnerable to do many irrational things. Moshe had lovingly guided the Jews
during their exodus from Egypt, and now, suddenly they thought that he was
dead !!
