Parshas Vayeishev
"Because she told me what she was doing instead of asking my advice, I didn't tell her my opinion. Now I can kick myself for not saying anything." Rashi (Biraishis 38:1) tells us that Yaacov's sons had a complaint against their brother Yehudah. "Had you told us to send Yosef back home instead of selling him, we would have done it." The Chofetz Chaim says that when you don't give a person rebuke, that person has a right to complain. I would add that even if he doesn't complain, your inaction can haunt you for a long time. Not doing something good is as devastating as doing something bad !! Have a great Shabbos !! Rabbi Chaim Flom __________________________________________________________ |

Dear Rabbi Flom,
How could the brothers "complain" to Yehuda, that he didn't have Yosef sent home ?? If it wouldn't have been for Yehuda, they would have let Yosef die in the pit?? He should be the hero, not demoted? Tzivy |

Dear Tzivy,
Your question actually is the foundation of a very powerful message that can be learned from this Rashi. Even if I do something good, if I could have done better (even though what I did is better than what others have done) I am still taken to task for not having done better !! Maybe in fact, that is why the Torah "credits" Reuvain with saving Yosef (Biraishis 37:21"and he[Reuvaine] saved him [Yosef] from their hands"), and not Yehudah. Take care. Rabbi Flom |
