Behar-Bechukosai
"I used to drop off the garbage in a bin down the street from my house and then cross the street to ask people if they needed a ride. One time however, the bus came before I had a chance to ask them. Now I go to the bus stop first." "When your brother becomes poor... you must come to his aid." (Vayikra 25:35) Rashi says "Don't let him fall and pick him up, rather help him out when he starts falling." Rav Chaim Falaghi zt"l said that Rashi is teaching us not to delay in doing a mitzva. Procrastination can make it much harder to do a mitzva or cause you to lose it altogether. Have a great Shabbos !! Rabbi Chaim Flom _____________________________________________________ |

Dear Rabbi Flom,
What about in a case where delaying won't cause you to lose the mitzva? Sincerely, Mark |

Dear Mark, First of all, I once saw a line in the Reader's Digest "When you think your plan is foolproof, don't underestimate the power of the fools." Second point is, that even if you won't lose out by delaying, it is still problematic. The nature of a person is that when he wants something or loves something, he wants it now. If someone was waiting for a response for a job or an acceptance letter and it is delivered to him, he wouldn't put it in his pocket and say "I'll read it tomorrow" but would read it right away. "Zereizus" (doing things right away) does not just prevent me from losing out, it also shows my love of the mitzva. I hope this answered your question. Rabbi Flom |
