And it will be, that the maiden to whom I will say, 'Lower your pitcher and I will drink,' and she will say, 'Drink, and I will also water your camels,' her have You designated for Your servant, for Isaac, and through her may I know that You have performed loving kindness with my master." (Bereishis 24:14)
The Beis Halevi explains the wisdom found in the previous verse. If Rifka gave a stranger water directly from her own pitcher it meant she was generous and kind. If she did not take the remaining water home because she was worried it may now carry the disease of a stranger, it meant she was wise. And if she did not pour the remaining water on the ground but instead gave it to Eliezer's camels because it might embarrass him, it meant she had derech eretz (good manners) Even the smallest of our actions reflects who we are and can either bring disgrace or honor to G-d. We need to scrutinize even our simplest and mundane behavior and ask ourselves "when will our actions reach the actions of our father's". Application: Identify a small behavior you have which may offend others. Give ten quick answers to the following sentence stem: I could easily bring more Honor to G-d by simply... If not now, when? |
