I noticed the odd spelling of Yerushalayim in the Haftorah today, as in
Haftora Shoftim from bible.ort.org It occured to me that perhaps this Haftorah is perhaps written in Aramaic, and this is the standard spelling? That this spelling might be the source for why in English the city is spelled Jerusalem? And recalling the commentary somewhere in Sefer Bereishis explaining that two righteous men had named the city by different name "Yeru" and "Shalem" which were combined to make the current name -- yet we have "...layim" ... this might more accurately sound like "Shalem". |

Dear Rob,
Is the "odd spelling" of Yerushalayim, the fact that there is no "yud" before the final "mem"? (I don't have access to the site you quoted.) In all of Tanach that is the way Yerushalayim is spelled. Mark |

Shalom,
If I'm not mistaken, I read a Pshat in the Me'am Lo'ez, that the Yud is missing from Yerushalaim to show our mourning over the destruction. Dovi |
