I would appreciate some information and perspective on the halacha regarding men shaving their beards, whether it is permitted at all, with only electric razors, etc. I have encountered many different opinions on this matter, and while it seems trivial, I truly believe it's one of those seemingly minor halachic points that separate us from the goyim. As such, it deserves serious consideration. As a Jew, should I have a beard, and how should it look?

There are many different halachic opinions regarding shaving. Chassidim do not permit shaving at all. Most Litvish Rabbonim permit shaving with either powder or an electric shaver. Among electric shavers, many Rabbonim do not approve of the lift-and-cut models, which cut very close to the skin like a razor. In general the Braun/Remington micro-screen type are less problematic, as there is no sharp blade touching the skin. However, some Litvish Rabbonim prohibit all shavers. Ask your Rabbi about a specific model.
Then there is the issue of hashkafa, wearing a beard looks more "Jewish". The bigger the beard the more "Jewish", in many opinons. There are again many opinions on this issue and it largely depends on which group you are affiliated with. As far as the hashkafa aspect is concerned, your wife's opinion should be a significant factor.

I completely agree that domestic tranquility is more important than beard style, and a wife's opinion in these matters should be the end of the debate. My remark was a joke, or maybe you knew that, sorry . (It's so hard to decipher tone on these message boards.)
