i forget which daf it is, but ya'll know the sugia about being a nazir until mashiach comes in eruvin.
one of the positions, was that either mashiach or eliyahu must go to the sanhedrin first. is that a psak lamysa? meaning must we have a sanhedrin in effect when he comes? or is it just a bonus or what? i havent seen any rishonim or acharonim discuss the necessity to have sanhedrin. |

Lori, Although the Sanhedrin might be re-established before the coming of the Messiah, this would not necessarily have to do with his anointing by oil. The first chapter of Kerithoth teaches us that the kings of David's lineage do not require re-anointing one after another, and that Solomon was an exception. Their anointing is passed down unto them automatically. Sincerely, David Ben-Abraham |

Yashar koach, I believe that the Rambam brings the same din in his Hilchos Melachim.

It seems to me that the intent of the Torah as being the constitution of the Jewish commonwealth, the Sanhedrin has a mandate to establish and rule as a domestic home government. The king gets his authority from the Sanhedrin and his sphere of authority centers upon and is limited unto foreign affairs. Domestic intra-bnai brit diplomacy having and/or taking the primary function of just rulership; foreign affairs having a secondary role, the king of Israel labors upon establishing inter-bnai brit diplomacy. The Talmud hints to this primary/secondary relationship when it teaches that if a sage and the king of Israel come into a room that a person first gives honor unto the Sage and afterward gives honor to the king of Israel. The reason being that any Israel has merit to be king but a Torah Sage who can find?
with respect, moshe |
