In reading the Hagada portion today it bothered me that the "chochom" says "eschem" - as the object plural pronoun "you" (on the verb "command")...

and the "rasha" says "l'chem" - "to you [plura]" questioning the meaning of the "avodah" (work).

A simple reading of the hagada's response to the rasha seem to harp upon the exclusionary "you", and tells the rasha that he would not have been included in those redeemed.

Are there any other indications in their respective word choices which support treating the first one as wise and the second wicked?

  • Chochom mentions Hashem - reference Yaakov's voice when Yitzchak intended to give Eisav a bracha
  • Chochom enumarates 3 aspects of that which Hashem commanded
  • Tam also fails to mention Hashem, and doesn't even mention avodah, which can be Avodas Hashem

however

  • Rasha refers to mitzvos as work - perhaps alluding to his thinking of them as "Avodah Kasha / crushing labor" or arduous
  • Rasha neither acknowledges that Hashem is in the picture, nor commanded any of it

Are there any significant subtle word choices to look at?

Should the rasha not be given some mussar about the actual indicators of why his words show him to be a rasha, more than fixating upon the exclusionary "you"?

Are we overlooking the exclusionary "you" of the chochom simply because we believe him to be a chochom?

If the chochom described only Avodas Hashem would we praise his wisdom in focusing on the avoda aspect?
