Here's a great recipe for American Doughnuts (as opposed to Israeli Sufganiyot):
1 oz. yeast (1 1/2 pkts)
2 C. warm water
1/2 c. sugar
2 t. salt
2 eggs
1/2 c. shortening
7+ cups flour
Mix everything. Rise 1 1/2 hours. Roll out, cut out. Allow to rise uncovered until light. Fry until golden. While warm glaze:
2 c. powdered sugar
2/3 c. or less boiling water
Enjoy!!
( I use a real doughnut cutter with a hole in the middle).
