Avoth of Rebbi Nathan (22: 11) explains "One whose deeds are more than his wisdom, his wisdom endures, as it is said, 'We will do and we will hear' (Exodus 24 :7)."

Rabanu Yona explains this idea as follows: One who takes it upon himself wholeheartedly to observe and to do according to the Law…is possessed of a reward from that day forward for all of the mitzvoth of the Torah which he has heard and understood, and for all those things which he has not yet fathomed, but with which he has clothed himself in righteousness; and he acquires merit for what is revealed to him and for all that is concealed from him.

This man's deeds are accounted more than his wisdom, for though he lacks the knowledge of a thing, he is rewarded for it, as was the case with Israel at Sinai, "We will do and we will hear," placing their acceptance of the deed before their hearing of it. Is it possible, otherwise, that a man's deeds be more than what he knows?

This idea is also seen regarding the Passover sacrifice which was commanded to take place on the 14th of Nissan. As it says: ‘So the children of Israel went and did; as the Lord commanded Moses and Aaron, so they did.’(Shemot 12:28)

The Mechilta asks: Did the children of Israel already do it? Wasn’t this said to them on Rosh Chodesh (the first day of the month)? Rather since they accepted upon themselves to do it, the Torah credits them for it as if they had already done it.

Rav Yeruchim brings the Ramban to show this concept in the foundation of our creation: ‘Everything that exists under the sun or above was not made from non¬existence at the outset. Instead, G-d brought forth from total and absolute nothing a very thin substance devoid of corporeality but having a power of potency fit to assume form and to proceed from potentiality into reality. This was the primary matter created by G d; it is called by the Greeks hyly (matter). After the hyly, He did not create anything, but He formed and made things with it, and from this hyly He brought everything into existence and clothed the forms and put them into a finished condition.

Shavous holds our potential spirituality and growth for the entire year. The more we accept upon ourselves the yoke of the Torah the more we will develop. A true and deep resolution has more latent power and prospective energy than we can imagine. Make the most of this seminal holiday by really giving your all!

Application:
Contemplate ways to strengthen your Torah observance. Choose limited resolutions which you are sure you can keep.

Give 10 quick answers to the following sentence stem:
If I understood the power of my decisions I would…
When I absolutely accept upon myself to do the right thing…

If not now, when?
