2 Divrei Torah for Pesach
1) "My great-great grandfather won the Grand Prize in the lottery" is never said with as much enthusiasm as "I won the Grand Prize in the lottery". In the Haggada we say "(On Pesach night) the more one tells about the Exodus, the more he is praiseworthy." In general, the more one does a mitzva, the better it is, so why is it mentioned specifically in reference to telling about the Exodus? Possibly an answer is that we have another concept on Pesach of " In every generation everyone is obligated to view himself as being liberated from Egypt". The more I elaborate about the Exodus, the more it shows that I view myself as being freed from Egypt!! 2) A few years ago, Coke (I think) had a wordless picture advertisement in Saudi Arabia. The first scene was a miserably thirsty looking man. The second was a man drinking a Coke, and the third was the man looking very happy. The ad was a big flop because Arabic (like Hebrew) is read right to left, and not left to right !! When we read the Torah (Shemos 14:9-27) it seems like the Egyptians chased the Jews, the Jews prayed, and G-d saved them. The reality was, according to the Medrash Rabba (Shemos 21:5), different. "G-d wanted to hear the prayers of the Jews and it wasn't forthcoming, so he 'sent' the Egyptians, and then they prayed." (Not that G-d needs our prayers; to the contrary, our praying is good for us, because it brings us closer to G-d, which is our raison d'etre, reason for existence.) Let's have G-d hear our prayers of thanks, so He won't have to hear our calls of distress !! Have a Chag Kosher veSameach !! Rabbi Chaim Flom |

As far as I know, no language is read from the bottom up. Oriental languages go top down, and left across.(ie The first column read on extreme left side, is down, and then the one to the right of it is read down etc)
Take care. Rabbi Flom |
