CONCERNING YOM KIPPURGleanings from the writings of Rabbi Yehiya
Bashiri

"Be apprised that the Day of Atonement (Yom Kippur) is a day of pardon and forgiveness for the iniquities of the entire world, whether for single individuals or for communities at large, that is to say, the entire body of Israel who make confessions on that [day], and particularly, for he that is penitent. Wherefore, it is fitting that all persons confess their sins on the Day of Atonement, and make a firm decision to turn away [from their sins], in order that they might find atonement, and that their repentance becomes acceptable [in the eyes of G-d] – seeing that it is a time of repentance afforded to all!

Now the commandment to confess [each man his sins] on the Day of Atonement is meant to begin by [each man] confessing during the afternoon prayer (Minhah), on the eve of Yom Kippur, before he eats [his supper], [fearing] that he might choke himself and die while eating, before he had had time to confess [his sins]. Therefore, let a man confess [his sins] before his sitting down to eat, and repeat the same confession on Yom Kippur at nightfall, and [again] at the morning prayer and during Musaf, and [again] at the afternoon prayer, and during Ne'illah….

At the recess of Kippur, the order which we make use of in the Havdallah ceremony is to bless, first, over the cup [of wine],
followed by [the blessing] over the candle, and, lastly, the [blessing known as] 'Hamavdil' (lit. 'He who distinguishes between holy and profane,' etc.). One does not bless over a candle at the conclusion of Yom Kippur except over that candle which remained lit throughout the entire day of Yom Kippur, even as though it had rested. (See: Genesis Rabba, Parashs Vayishlach, section # 82:17 for the source of this teaching). Neither should he light [his own candle] from that [candle] taken from a gentile,[even though it was left burning throughout the entire day], but at the recess of the Sabbath it is permissible to do so…

At the recess of Kippur, they do not make use of fragrant herbs [in the Havdallah ceremony], except if that day happened to fall on Motzei Shabbath…"
