This year Shushan Purim is on Shabbos. So for those of us in Yerushalayim (or other walled cities) the mitzva's of the day are transferred to friday (the megilla) and sunday (seuda, mishloach manos and matanot le'evyonim)

Why is megilla on friday when other three are on sunday?
Why can't we have the seuda on Shabbos?

Kri'at Ha'Megilah is not postponed to Sunday, because the Megillah itself says: "And it shall not pass without being fulfilled, the days of Purim at their proper time and in their proper way". Meaning we aren't allowed to have Purim pass without reading the Megillah(, but we are allowed to do so earlier if necessary.)

And the seuda is postponed until Sunday because of "Ain Me'arvin Simcha B'Simcha" - in this case, the Shabbat and the Purim meal. Most people, however, make the Shabbat seuda slightly fancier (in honor of Purim).

Hope it answered the questions. Smile

i've heard that matanot le'evyonim is given on friday, since it is associated with the megila reading (the Gemara says 'the poor look forward to the reading of the megila).

Dear Yair,
Let examine the statement ain me'aravin simcha b'simcha. The problem it the Radbaz permits weddings on purim which is the classic ain me'ervim simcha b simcha. The text is in the yerushalmi is that we says we postphone the seudah if it comes out on shabbat. The best answer we have is that we do not meverav simcha of a bet din with a simcha from shamaim. Afterall we have a seder on pesach and shabat which are both from shamaim.

Bet din = a jewish court which determines the date of holidays like purim
Shamaim - heaven, meaning hashem wrote in the torah
Ain maravim - we do not mix one joyous occaision with another
Radbaz = 16th century Egyptian rabbi.

I recently saw a beautiful alternative reason for not having the Sabbos and Purim Seudas concurrently. The focus of Shabbos is to comprehend Hashem through ones Da'as (Knowledge). One realizes on shabbos who his creator is and his own obligations. On Purim we serve Hashem Ad dlo Yudah - Without the logical steps.

That's a beautiful explanation. Thanks for sharing it.
