Thank you David for this very useful information and explanation! But what is the position of the New Sanhedrin on this important issue? |

To our friend, "ASK NOAH," I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I know very little about the so-called "New Sanhedrin." Although I have heard about them, I have my skepticism regarding them. The members of the Sanhedrin, from what I've heard, had to meet many harsh criteria before being eligible to serve as judges on that most esteemed council. Furthermore, they all had "smicha" (the ordination by "laying on of hands") given to them by persons who had been administered the same from persons going back to ancient times. They could also issue a death sentence, which everyone knows, in Israel does not exist today, and if these Rabbis should assay to do so, they will be duly arrested by the local authorities. Rather, you should ask, "What does Rav Wozner say about polygamy?" Or, "What does Rav Elyashiv, or Rav Ovadia Yoseph, have to say about polygamy?" This is my most humble opinion. Sincerely, David |

David,
Shalom. Nice to see you here. From what I know about the new Sanhedrin, few people regard it as something ultimately authoritative. Rather, they hope that it marks the beginning of Israel's halachic future. Joseph |
