In another thread it has been discussed that some controversial children's books can be found in some school libraries.
Elsewhere it came up in discussion that at some day schools in the USA, the students recite the US "pledge of allegience" which includes the phrase "to the flag". Some consider pledging allegience to any piece of cloth to be a form of avoda zora. Since pledging loyalty to a host country, particulary when that country defines loyalty as "when right to support her, and when wrong to correct her", seems to not be in conflict with any mitzvah, IMHO. In a public school I could understand how some intolerant bullies might want to beat up a Jewish kid who felt it necessary to drop a particular phrase, or for a public school teacher to resent such a student. But what goes on in our day schools? |

I don't think there is anything wrong with it. I don't think anyone thinks that your actually pledging to an inanimate object, but rather to the country it represents. Also, pledging allegiance does not equal worshiping anyhow.

I believe Rav Feinstein address the question of having American flags in synagogues. He said maybe unneccessary and maybe justified, but one thing was certaint, it is nothing to start a fight about.
