You may be refering to Rav Preida who learned things patiently 400 times with a student, usually he got at at the 399'th time.
One day, it too 400, and Rav Preida asked him why, and it was because the student was preoccupied with worry that the rav was leaving and wouldn't stay for the 400. So, Rav Preida started from the beginning and learned 400 more times, and the student got it at the 799'th time. We think we most recently read this version in the children's book "I Love Torah" published by Feldheim, and I think the auther is Rabbi Greenwald. |

The story doesn't end there.
Here's a version I found online at this website: http://www.neveh.org/winston/parsha57/mishpat.html Rebi Preida once had a student that had to be taught something 400 times before he could understand it. One day, the rebi was asked to do a mitzvah, and the student failed to learn the lesson. "Why is it different today than all other days?" he asked his talmid. "Because," he answered, "from the moment the master was asked to do the mitzvah, I was distracted, thinking to myself, 'Soon the master will have to get up ... Soon the master will have to get up ...'." Rav Preida said, "If that is so, let me teach the lesson to you again." He then repeated the teaching another 400 times, and because of this, a heavenly voice called out to Rav Preida, "Which reward do you want? Either you can live a long life, or you and your generation can merit The World-to-Come?" He answered, "I request that I and my generation merit The World-to-Come." To this God responded, "Give him BOTH rewards!" |

Eiruvin 54b. Didn't he get it on the 400th time? ____________ http://limudtorah.jewishweb.org Please help the Global Yeshiva to continue spreading high quality Torah by sponsoring a Shiur in the "Understanding Mishna Brurah" forum. All sponsorships are tax deductible. |

Speaking of gematrias, didn't we learn that they are just as valid when off by one?

Supposedly the Vilna Ga'on said that. But a friend of mine that is into Gematrios told me that he asked Rav Moshe Wolfson in this matter, and he doesn't recommend to do those unless someone knows what he's doing (whatever that might be) I heard that The Steipler brings a proof to this from the Gemarah in Gittin 88a Kollel Iyun Hadf Paraphrases " (i) Question (Rav Chisda): "Hash-m was diligent to bring the evil upon us, for He is a Tzadik" - how is this a reason? (k) Answer #2 (Ula): Hash-m benefited us by not allowing us to stay in the land for 852 years (the numerical value of "You will grow old"), rather exiling us 2 years before this, so we would not be subject to the accompanying curse "You will perish" So it would seem that 1 year wasn't good enough to not to be part of the Gematriah. ____________ http://limudtorah.jewishweb.org Please help the Global Yeshiva to continue spreading high quality Torah by sponsoring a Shiur in the "Understanding Mishna Brurah" forum.
