Question How many on here have checked out the Chat room? Anyone have a time that they would like to meet there?

Yes I have been there. Also, I would like to get a feel for when people are on or would like to be on.

P.S. The Guest chat is moderated while the "Torah Chat" is not.

I'm now there for the meantime, with the Guest chat currently being moderated.

Its surely lighter weight to post messages to an interactive text chat room than to post messages on this part of the forum.

Perhaps if the chat room saved text would be available to participants afterward it would be of even more use?

Perhaps ad-hoc chavrusa learning could be promoted if allocating a new interactive text chat room on the fly for a given subject would be possible... especially along with the ability to flag down a rabbi after chavrusa learning has exhausted their efforts to find an explanation to whatever is being discussed.

A voice channel in parallel might be particularly useful, and there are free voice over internet technologies, with voice conference room capability as well.

The ad-hoc chavrusa learning idea, sounds interesting. What do you have in mind?

A voice channel? Do you have any that you know of, in mind?

For ad-hoc chavrusa learning, how about if someone was learning a page of gemara on their own - such as an interpretation as discussed in other threads here...

A user could post the tractate and page number and anyone else interested in setting a time - like the present - to jump in and try to tackle it.

In fact I would see benefit in being able to start a discussion with a URL to the gemara page image at dafyomi.org or something, and to pinpoint the spot in question by how far down the page etc.

Or to point out two areas of gemara where the user wants to contrast them... in different tractates even.

A full interactive whiteboard would be too much, but I think there are lightweight technologies available.

for a voice channel, something like Free World Dialup I think has a lot of potential. Totally free full duplex telephone quality voice channel internationally... plus voice conference capability.

Freely downloadable soft phones as well as higher quality hardware SIP phones are readily available.

As newly promoted "Chat Moderator" I would like to announce that I will try to announce when I'll be in the room. Usually it will be for at least 30 minutes to an hour depending on usage.

At the time of this posting the chat room is now open.

Mazel Tov, Sam!

What timezone is the listed posting time of 16:26?

Or, are there particular universal (or New York) times at which you expect to be manning the post?

Thank you Rob.

Good point, I didnt put a time because I forgot to do so. Next time I will try to remember to do so. Perhaps if there are people interested the chat room could be populated. Also, from time to time, it might be a good idea to simply sit in the Torah Chat room so that others will slowly join. Once you have two in the room, discussions can take place.

Anyone have a time that they would like to suggest to have the room active?

When writing the time that interests you, please include Time Zones.

I'll be in there now, for a while.

Chat room text is logged somewhere, right?

Perhaps we could have one or more read-only discussion threads on topics of general interest which were discussed in the chat rooms?

Those of us who want to participate in those discussions will have to do so during logged chat room meetings.

And perhaps Sam as moderator could try to edit down the chat logs to remove any foot-in-mouth embarassing statements that I might make in a chat room, or well-wish personal greetings to fellow chatters, which are not of general interest, worthy of preservation?

I have some experience with live interactive chat room Torah learning elsewhere, and I think text chat logs may contain some worthy Torah thoughts... in the other forum I mention there is also a voice channel, and thus the chat logs only have part of the story, and a rabbi's explanation of why a chat text comment is completely wrong could be gone with the wind.

Perhaps what I envision for a chat logs discussion thread might be "minutes" of meetings in which there was worthwhile Torah discussion that would likely be of interest to others... if that wold not be too demanding upon Sam?

1. Rights have been given for all chat moderators to view the transcripts.
2. The rules of the chat rooms are on the chat homepage at http://globalyeshiva.com/eve/chat
3. The time zone of the Global Yeshiva postings are Jerusalem time.
4. I think the best way to get the chat rooms happening is to make a chat event. If anyone feels they are qualified to chat on a specific subject that should make a post announcing the chat event and the time.

If not now, when?

Dear Rabbi Mitterhoff:

Is there any reason that chat moderators could not post chat room text as a discussion thread if there is interest in doing such things?

I noticed that there are people who do enter the chat Torah Chat room, say hi and leave when there is no response right away. They should understand that it is a new idea, they should "stick around" and wait a few minutes or simply keep checking for a while, and eventually the interest level will pick up.

Perhaps a suggestion would be that if anyone does want to spend some time in the chat room, they could post to this thread. This way, letting me, and others know that they're spending time in there, how long they plan on being in there for, and this way, others will know that the chat room is being active.
