I was recently told by a Muslim co worker that Allah is The G-d of Avraham, and that Muslims worship Hashem. I obviously don't know too much about Islam, but I do know that they are monotheists as we are. Would anyone here know if Muslims truly believe that they are worshipping The One and Only True G-d of Israel?

Yes the moslems worship just one god and are strict monotheists (maybe more than the jews). Mohemed is a just another prophet in a line of seven prophets. The Koran, the written text, is that which is holy. The rabbinical authorities have no trouble accepting Islam as worshipping hashem. The main problem is their disconcerting tendency to kill everyone who disagrees with them which has its basis in the Koran.

That's a really good question.
I have always assumed they did worship the same G-d....but now I'm not so sure. If they are following the god as defined and outlined by Mohammed, their prophet, and his teachings are contrary to what we know to be G-d's teaching, would Allah be considered the same G-d as Hashem? I am not really familiar with Islam, nor do I really care to learn, so I don't know for a fact that what Mohammed says about Allah is contrary to what we know about Hashem, but assuming they are vastly different, is it really a different G-d? .....or is it the same G-d and Mohammed just screwed up? I think Muslims believe that the Koran was dictated to Mohammed overnight. However, some - very few - of them think that half of it was dictated by Allah (Hashem) and the other half by satan. Salman Rushdie is hiding out in England from those Muslims who do not think so - the vast majority of Islam - because he had written the book titled "The Satanic Verses". There is a price on his head for that "heresy".
However, that doesn't change things. Koran does call on the believers to rid the world of the infidels through jihad. The Jews in Koran were accorded a double status - it recognizes that there are the pious Jews, who are trustworthy and who have a lot for the Muslim to learn from them - and it says that there are the "merchant Jews", who would sell their soul to satan (Shaitan) for profit. About the latter, it teaches not to befriend them. Mohammed in one of his numerous battles was indeed betrayed by a Jewish tribe whose help in that battle he was counting on. After that he never said a good word about Jews. This is the information I got from a very heated discussion I had once with a devout Iranian Muslim. The rest is from history books: Until the mid-19th century CE, anti-Jewish moods were not a prevailing feature of Islam - the only noteworthy exception being the Moors (North-African Muslims). Then, a very powerful movement of Wahhabism swept over all Dar-al-Islam. It was a nationalist liberation movement, aimed at declaring jihad on all the infidels, including foreign Jews: for example, in Iran, Iranian Jews were not bothered; the same goes for the Jews in Iraq. But a Jew from Europe, or from Russia, was very much not welcome there. Its peak was reached during WWI, when Prince Feysal, with the help of his personal friend and English intelligence officer, Col. Laurence, took over all of the Arabian world from the Ottoman Empire. He and his lieutenants were very much upset to find out that he had conquered it all not for himself, but for the Antante - British, French, and Russian Empires. The Russian Empire seized to exist the same year, and the other two amicably divided the entire Middle East, leaving the Arabs out of the picture. The empires that remained after WWI were pretty much untouchable, and the only trade with Arabs was from the position of force. The only nationality in the Middle East that traded with the outside world as equals were the Jews, so the "kill the Jews" campaign started, being openly and unequivocally supported and even spearheaded by the mullahs in all mosques without exception. Just to add a quick note to this conversation, the word "ISLAM" means "No God But (the One True) God" and is a reference to the God of Avrahem, the One True God. Even though Muslims believe that Avrahem was Muslim, not Jewish, and that Mohammed was the latest in a long line of Prophets (they are actually awaiting the arrival of another prophet, the last prophet, as it turns out), they are still staunhch believers in HaShem, or at least their view of Him. This information was provided to me by a Muslim co-worker in the hopes that it would proove useful. I hope it has.

dk, I am afraid your coworker has slightly misguided you, but did not intentionally mislead. Indeed, the first line of the main statement of Islam is the same as our Shema - "There is no god other than (The One True) God" - they call Him Allah, much as we call Him Hashem - to which they add, "And Mohammed is His prophet". But in Arabic, the word Islam means peace. It has the same root as Shalom in Hebrew.
In the Muslim worldview, the world is divided into Dar al-Islam - the world of peace - and Dar al-Jihad - the world of holy war. All infidels belong in the latter, while all believers belong in the former, and believers must fight against Dar al-Jihad so that Dar al-Islam be firmly established on the planet earth. Like with the Japanese samurai, the highest honor for a devout Muslim is to die in the battlefield. In a declaration of war, Arabic leader of the times of the Crusades Saladdin wrote to the Crusaders holding control at the time of one of the cities in Anatolia, "...We dear death the way you dear life..." |

Alex, thanks for the clearification; I will address this with my co-worker. I am sure that I have mis-understood him rather than him mis-leading me (even unintentionally). Again, thanks. Your post is very informative.

Thank you all for the wonderful information on Islam. I can now understand how a Muslim comprehends his/her conception of monotheism. I'm truly learning many things from this terrific forum.

muslims are monotheists that worship one G-d whome they claim is our G-d too.
Islam started in a pagan society, and has many pagan origins, for example, the pagans worshipped a supreme G-d whose name was shortened and becmae called Allah - literally 'The G-d'. Allah had 2 daughters. So, mohammed said still worship Allah but do away with the daughters. Islam was designed to convert jews christians and pagans. So, to convert jews he added all the jewish characters but gave them islammic names. Ibrahim, Musa, Ishaq, Yakub, e.t.c. and Isa for jesus. So mohammed could say to jews 'we believe in abraham isaac and jacob too'. And he could say to christians 'we believe in jesus'. He islamized the stories, his aim was to attract the curiousity of jews christians and pagans. Make islam more palatable to them. Islam becomes a tool to unite all the arabs, and take over other religions. Christians speak of fulfilling the old law. Muslims speak of completing it. It's the same thing. Replacement theology. |

Shalom David,
Thank you for your response. I'm beginning to see that Islam has a sort of a "progressive revelation" theology. The more I understand about other peoples beliefs the more I find myself appreciating and loving Judaism. G-d Bless and welcome to the forum! Avi |

Actually, there are some things people on this forum are getting wrong. First of all, Muslims believe the Koran was dictated over a period of forty years, Muhammad was the last prophet (much emphasis on this, though Jesus is expected to return at the End of Days to kill the Antichrist, whose followers will mostly be Jews), and Jihad, based on Muslim sources, is really a conflict with the self and that Holy War is institutionalized to help this along. For further research, see http://www.islamonline.net, before you draw conclusions that you don't know about (and sadly, there is an anti-Jewish dimension to Islam, I have to admit). Also, in addition to "Jews-for-Jesus" there are "Jews-for-Allah" ("ethnically Jewish, spiritually Muslim"-slogan; they have a website I hear). Someone start a thread on these Jewish-other religion blends and what they mean. Judaism and Islam are similar in countless ways in addition to the same G-d and the same prophets (except for Jesus and Muhammad of course). Both follow the same brand of legalism except for the fact that Islam is more concerned with prayer and modesty than prayer and ritual (few rituals in Islam); both have a main canon and a set of interpretations (in Islam, this is called the "Hadith," in Judaism, the Talmud), both have similar prayer-structures, and similar worldviews when it comes to the role of Man in the world and the universe. These are just the basic similarities, I could go much further if you asked. Learning about other religions can help you learn much about your own and he way it applies to the world, as well as help you open your eyes to the world's problems. Isn't that what Judaism is about? For example, I found out recently that the al-Aqsa mosque is condered to be the rebuilt First Temple by the Muslims, just as the prophet "Suleiman" had built it (just so you know, there are more than seven prophets, as they also include Noach (Nuh) Lot (Lut), David (Dawud), and Shlomo (Suleiman)). Now that we know this information, how do the Jews get around it and solve the problem in a moral manner? What comes out should not only solve the world's problems, but also teach us about ethics and the Divine in general, and how it applies in theory and in practice. How, you ask? That's up to you. That's all I have to say regarding this thread. Keep discussing! |

I'm not quite sure of the meaning of this particular posting.
The reason as to why most of us post questions and give answers (sometimes incorrect) to other's questions here on this forum is to learn. G-d Bless, Avi |

Of course it is to learn, and we are all learning from each other! I simply decided to provide the correct information and reccomend learning about Islam by yourself instead of relying on the words of co-workers. I forgot to mention that the only people who are qualified to give an opinion on Islamic doctrine are the Muftis. Islamic doctrine varies from Mufti to Mufti, so when a Muslim co-worker gives you info on Islam, he is really conveying the doctrinal opinion of his Mufti in an attempt to convert you to his particular view of Islam, as the word of the Mufti is considered an Islamic legal ruling. Therefore, it is best to go research Islam on your own and derive a clear picture from the opinions of many Muftis, such as what is posted on Islam-Online. Sorry for any inclarities. |

Thank you for the response and the links to other information. I never "rely" on the interpretations of co-workers or others without doing a bit of research myself which is the reason I posted my question here also. I must admit that my reasearch into Christianity and Islam is limited due to the fact that neither religion holds much of a interest for me. Thanks again for the info that you have provided.

It appears that the Muslim Allah was not an original god of the pre-Islamic Arab populations. Allah was one of a pantheon of stone god idols whom Muhammad created as the equivalent of the Hebrew monotheistic unseen G-d. The Qur'an written by the prophet Muhammad includes many concepts that are an anathema to the G-d of the Jewish people. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Rabbi Mitterhoff, |
