I was listening to a respectable radio talk show, and the information given was that Iran is very close to having nuclear capabilities (or is already there) and that its officials are publicly saying "We are going to wipe Israel off the face of the Earth."

The host speculated that Israel is considering using its own nuclear weapons to strike preemptively.

It all sounded pretty convincing, which is why it also sounded VERY scary. Someone tell me why this isn't likely...?

as you said. if iran were close to developing, israel would strike with a missile.

israel does have anti nuclear weapons. They most likely work.

It easy to protect yourself against a nuke. Unless it hits you on the head. Seriously though, anybody within 10 blocks of the nuke gets killed. But outside of that, you can protect yourself by wearing a nuclear weapons suit and mask. It's just a matter of filtering out tiny particles.

Arab leaders aren't suicidal. They wouldn't make themsevles a country of martyrs.

They think (and they may be right) that if they hit israel with a nuke. then Israel would make sure that the whole middle east glowed green.

The military have a strange habit of discovering military threats when someone threatens their budget. Since we have a peace treaty with Jordan and Egypt, and the wonderful US govenment under that wonderful Mr. Bush eliminated the Iraqis, the militray really has to think hard to justify maintaining their budget in Israel. Iran is a threat. However, even Persians can count. They are surrounded on two sides by 150,000 US troops (thank you again Mr. Bush) and are unlikely to do anything to bother anyone. Actually the only people they bothered since the revolution is Saudi Arabia. On the other hand Iran was attacked by Iraq and fought a ten year war with Iraq and are unlikely to disarm for the forseeable future.

I was just reading how the Navy is trying to justify its cold war submarine fleet base. Do you know the Chinese have a large navy??
