Last week I read a book called "Secrets of the Soul"
Here's a Picture of the book. by Rabbi Yehuda Srevnik "Secrets of the Soul" speaks of the spiritual messages revealed by Facilitated Communication, a method to allow communication impaired individuals let their thoughts be known. Here's a weblink that I found interesting and to quote from it: Rabbi Eliyahu E. Dessler wrote (Michtav Me'Eliyahu Vol. 4, pp.162-3; Vol. 5, pp.163, 199) that the soul has an awareness of God and the spiritual realm. Yet if we experienced this with our conscious mind we would be so overwhelmed we would not have free will. That means, if we constantly experienced the higher spiritual goodness we would always make our life's decisions in accordance with what is "correct" in heaven -- God's will. But the job of choosing between "good" and "evil" is essential to our experience in this world. That's how we earn merit for being Great Human Beings. Rav Dessler explains the primary function of the brain is not only to be the place of thought but also to filter out knowledge and awareness of our higher selves and thereby maintain our free will. Rabbi Dessler also suggested that this is the explanation for what our Sages taught us (Talmud Baba Basra 12a), that though the classical form of prophecy ceased thousands of years ago, a more rudimentary form of it has been given to "idiots" (Hebrew: shotim) and children, "for their barrier [their brain] is not so firm." End Quote Has anyone else read this book or similar ones? |

I have actually read Secrets of the Soul.
But I mean to talk about the book (HIGHLY RECOMMENDED) "Holy Woman" about Rebbetzin Chaya Sara Kramer A"H (written by Sara Yocheved Rigler, Artscroll). In it is mentioned how Rebbetzin Chaya Sara took in many handicapped children throughout twenty years of her life, some requiring quite high maintenance. One of these children was Avramele, a mentally handicapped boy (now a full-grown man) who seemed to be quite a simple person in public. However, once a guest noticed how Avramele davened with intense kavanah--but as soon as Avramele noticed that he was being watched, he went back to his normal way. People who are mentally or physically handicapped are just that--mentally or physically handicapped. But spiritually, they understand the world a lot more than we do, and are in fact very special people--anything but handicapped. They are simple, but pure. And I believe that it is our opportunity not to shun them or fear them or ship them off to nursing homes because we don't know how to deal with them, but to learn from them what it is to purely love Hashem. |
