I've decided to use my nursing time more wisely and am reading (I'm afraid that I can't call it learning beause I know so little) the Tanach and am right now in Melachim Aleph. In any case both the Hebrew and the English say Yachmor - at first I read it as chamor which I know, but then quickly realized my mistake. My chumash doesn't give any discussion about it.
As an aside, when I'm nursing my other twin I'm reading parenting books. I just finished rereading Rabbi Keleman's To Kindle A Soul. Now I'm rereading My Child, My Disciple by Rabbi Orlowek. I figure that I need as much help as I can get! |

My translation renders "yachmor" as "fallow deer", whatever they are.

The Arabic of RSG (Rabbeinu Saadia Gaon) also has "yachmur," which is a "fallow deer." It's one of the smaller deer, that were once common to these regions. I remember seeing them as a child in the dark forests of Germany (Ramstein-Phalz). They have whitish spots on their fawn-coloured coat. David |

You don't have to go to Germany. We have plenty of Yachmorim at both Safari and Jerusalem zoo. One of my present projects deals with returning them to nature. They have been successful returned to Nachal Achziv near Haifa and now we are reintroducing them to the Judean Mountains.
