I'll give one example....

When looking at the lights, it reminds us that salavation always comes from HaShem (because He saved us from the greeks)
When looking at the lights, G-d saved us countless times - look how many great mighty nations and empires have risen and fell (greek, roman, ottoman, babylion, british etc etc so many!)

Have anyone got more thoughts to have when looking at the chanukah lights to spritually uplift a person.....

...That we have the FREEDOM to light these lights, thanks to the Maccabees (with G-d's help), and thanks to the many since who have fought for our right to believe and practice what we believe.

...How the lights reflect on my family's faces and on anything nearby, and how thankful I am for my family and for this whole beautiful world.

This has nothing to do with your lights question, but I feel the need to share something else that uplifts me each year at Chanukah:

When my oldest daughter was 8, she gave me a present for Chanukah, to be used when lighting the lights at Chanukah and every Shabbos.

It was a head covering, made of blue and white felt, with a star of David also made of felt. Although I had never given her a sewing lesson, she sewed the whole thing together with blue yarn. It was so nicely done, yet so obviously on a child's level, that I had to cry.

Today my daughter is 20, and the head covering is starting to fall apart...but I will never wear anything else when lighting candles.
