In my opinion, this subject gets undue attention by certain chassidic groups (especially by Breslov). The Gemara rarely speaks about the subject, and the only place in the Talmud where I can recall seeing anything about it was in the first chapter of Meseches Niddah. Overly speaking about this subject can cause feelings of guilt within a person. In the many years that I spent in a Yemenite Yeshiva, never once did I hear my Rabbi speak about this subject, as a subject on its own. The natural thing to do when these things happen, in my opinion, is to go to a "mikveh." Reciting the "Tikun Ha-kalali" (10 Psalms) is based after a similar teaching found in the Zohar, and is really a recent innovation as far as its actual practice is concerned, started by the followers of Rabbi Nachman of Breslau. The Zohar brings down only the headings of certain Psalms, any one of which would serve to do the same function as those mentioned in the "Tikun Ha-Kalali." Even so, the recital of these Psalms (the "Tikun Ha-Kalali") as an antedote to the aforestated problem was never observed by the Jews of Yemen. Rather, they pressed their children to marry at an early age, which is the right thing to do, and the best thing to do. Sincerely, David |

The article indicates that souls are brought down to the world from semenal emmission, and that these souls, since there is no procreated new body to inhabit, are captured by forces and consumed for their energy, and are angered by their "father" who brought them down to the world.
Is this one soul per sperm cell? In reproduction if only one sperm fertilizes one egg, and there was a sperm count much higher than 1, what keeps this above undesirable consequence from happening? |

Yes everything on there ive heard from my rebbeim or breslopv. There is a very interesting book that details all these things in a novel setting called The Light of Ephraim by Simcha benyosef - i suggest that whoever has problems with this should read this book - besides for helping it also teaches you basics in kabbalah in a very basic way - my rebbe in my yeshiva gave vaads for a whole month striaght on this topic during shoivivim - he said that the aruch hashulchan says that scientists have looked at semen under microscopes and there are images of human faces/bodies in the semen. To the questionj posed above - i did think of the same question but never aksed anyone - it is probabale that since you are having beiah lshem mitzvah with ur wife - even if no child comes out its still lshem mitzvah and theres no way to avoid seed coming out when you have to fulfill let's say conjugal rights to your wife- i think

Are you saying that it has been scientifically proven that semen actually contains little humans? |

Microscopes have come a long way since the publication of Aruch HaShulcan. Are you serious here? |

Just a note: Although most of what is brought down on that webpage may be legit, non-the-less, it is not a website to visit (a quick exploration of their website clearly reveals this).
Regarding the topic of masturbation: Although the action certainly does much harm, several things must be kept in mind. 1. לפום צער אגרה We are judged according to the difficulty of the action. This works both ways concerning reward and punishment. Just like fulfilling a mitzva with difficulty causes one to receive great reward, so too a sin done because one's yetzer is overwhelming him/her receives less punishment (provided that he/she didn't willfully transgress (במיזד). 2. Understand that yeridas (spiritual fallings) come to help us springboard higher. Both Reb Nachman of Breslov and the Alei Shur talk about this concept. This is the meaning of Chazal that "A Tzaddik falls seven times and then gets up". 3. We have a mitzva of serving Hashem B'simcha. Although, we have a mitzva to regret our Averas, excessive guilt can be influenced by the yetzar hara as well, can cause a repeat of that very sin, and also transgresses the mitzva of serving Hashem B'Simcha. A person who fell to this yetzar should follow the various advices given by Chazal (Ex. – mikva or 9 kavim in the shower, Tikkun klali, learning Torah, purifying one’s thoughts, speech, and sights, etc.), work to strengthen himself, and then move on. 4. PUT THINGS INTO PERSPECTIVE. It is ironic that people feel so much guilt over this particular Avera and yet never flinch when they transgress more serious and damaging Averas such as Anger, Embarrassing someone in public, and stealing sleep. Of Anger it is said, "כל מיני שולטים בו" - he can transgress ANY Avera. Not to mention that the physical affects on one's body are frightening. Of Public Embarrassment it says, "אין לו חלק לעולם הבא" - he'll lose his entire portion in Olam Habah. Of Stealing sleep it is taught that you can’t return it. Also, a thief is called a Rasha, which is a very harsh term. And yet, how many people are not careful about keeping quite at night so as not to wake neighbors?! The most important thing to remember a as Jew are the encouraging words that Rav Chaim Pinchas Sheinberg tells his students all the time “Keep Smiling and Keep Going”! -Magedman |

I think what is meant by the Aruch Hashulchon (Eh 23:1) is that the essence of the persons (the chromosomes and DNA) are all in the semen. Are we not but the combination of the sperm and the egg?

April: He is very serious: "With the development of a rudimentary microscope in 1677 Anton van Leeuwenhock discovered living sperm in the semen of animals, including humans. This discovery lead to the widely held belief that the sperm contained a tiny but fully formed person (homunculus) that only needed to be implanted in a female incubator to grow." The Aruch Hashulchan clearly believed this to be true. Menachem's Rebbi is teaching his students that it is still true. |
