There are books written in English which direct people as to the correct way to put Teffilin on. Since there are specific laws as to where they should be placed, and it can be a little tricky,(I have seen people who have worn teffilin for years that are not putting them on correctly) the best idea would be to have a Rabbi or someone knowledgable instruct you.

Shalom Richard,

as Rabbi Y. Kacev said it is tricky which is not a simple matter. for example are you righty or a lefty? and so forth. and even with books which are good such as by Ayren Kaplan "Tefilin" the pictures help but not much. which would save you alot of time to ask a rabbi or even an orthodox jew.

otherwise it get confusing. but if your still having trouble finding a rabbi were you live then we will figure somthing out...

It seems okay to me. I mean, some people wouldn't agree with some of the other stuff on the site, but that tefillin page looks fine.

That bit with the middle and fourth finger, by the way, is subject to immense variety and opinion. For example, most people do not wrap the strap around the fourth finger, etc... but these things are all secondary to the most important thing - correct placement of the tefillin on the head and arm.

Good Luck Smile

Rabbi Kacev please correct me if I am wrong but Richard I would suspect that you would want to follow the custums of your heritage. When I first started laying tefillin in college a decade ago, I asked several people for help and got several valid answers, for each of the respective traditions of those who were kind enough to help. If possible, I would suggest asking a family member about your background (if possible)and then speak with a rabbi. I wish you all the best in learning about this mitzvah.

Correct, Stephen, but there are things that are accepted universally, like the placement at the hairline horizantally parallel to the space between the eyes, and the one on your arm on your biceps. Other things are subject to dispute like the wrappings on the fingers, etc... But the aforementioned things are known worldwide and one does not need to check with his heritage. Other things, yes, like you said. Smile
