I have a question on the translation of the opening sentence of VaYetzei
"VaYetzei Yaakov miB'er Sheva vayelech Charana vayifga bamakom vayalen sham ki-va hashemesh" When looking at the meanings of the root "paga", I realized that too many possibilities existed, from "reached The Place" to "was encoutnered at The Place", to "(something - possibly not very good - ) happened to him at The Place" Since The Place means Mount Moriah, and Written Torah does not say so directly, is there an Oral Torah account of what really happened to him at The Place? Another question is related to the Torah's reason why he made a stopover there. "Ba hashemesh", there came the sun, meaning that he was traveling by night and resting by day. Is that because he was afraid of his brother's anger, or because it was too hot during the day, or is there any other explanation? Pardon my ignorance. Thank you very much for a response. There are 2 explanations in the term "Vayifgah" brought in the Oral Torah that I'm aware of. First the term Pegah can be refering to prayers. Like a different verse in Tanach Hashem says "Al Tifgah be" do not approach me with prayer. From here we deduce that Yaakov installed the Evening prayers (Maariv)
Another thing is learnt that the way was shortened for him. The first verse says that he went to Choron already, so Chazal says that he already arived in charon and he relized he passed Har Moriah and didn't pray there, so he went back, and the place went out to greet him. "Bo Hashemesh" refers to the setting of the sun, like when the rising of the sun is refered to as "the sun's coming out" ____________ http://limudtorah.jewishweb.org Please help the Global Yeshiva to continue spreading high quality Torah by sponsoring a Shiur in the "Understanding Mishna Brurah" forum.
