I'd like to comment on a few minor points of the style of this thread.
Avi, your first two entries are showing 3/25 at 2AM and nearly 11PM respectively, about 21 hours apart. Is 1 day a reasonable standard that if there is no follow up to think that noone knows the answer? What is a good standard for patiently waiting which the GY community should have for such things?
And I am assuming that if there is a chasidic custom to wear a coat over a kittel, as well as a kittel over a suit (now why did _I_ rent a tux only to be covered by kittel?!?) ... perhaps it is refered to by something other than "trench coat", perhaps with a Yiddish name? And by the name used by those who follow the custom might have triggered a quicker response.
And Rav Chaim, is the reason for a kittel at a Pesach Seder or on Yom Kippur for a different reason than Aveilos of Yerushalayim?

He He! Rob, I had seen people make posts during that time, so I assumed that they had seen my post but didn't respond. I called it a trench coat because that's what it usually is. I know it's neither a bekishe nor a rekelech....but, it may still have a different name, I guess. Avi

quote: Originally posted by Rav Chaim: I'm not too much into Taamei minhagim. My wife claims that the Kittel is a sign of Aveilos of Yerushalayim. Still we don't want to make it too obvious, so we cover it partly with a coat.
We are reminded of the Aveilos of Yerushalayim with the breaking of the plate by the two mothers. And of the Chosson stepping on a glass.
