The Chief Rabbi wears an elaborate robe. I've heard different stories about it, could someone provide a definitive explanation as to the origins of that robe?

The robe is the type worn by the Chacham Bashi, the Chief Rabbi of Israel since the Turks first officially instituted the office in the 1840's. It was dress of the Sephardic cheif rabbis in many Islamic countries.
There was never an Askenazic Chief Rabbi till Rav Kook was appointed in the 1920s. However, as far a Sephardic Jews are concerned, there is no such thing and their is only one Chacham Bashi and the Askanazim who came to live in Israel should of course accept the authority of the Chacham Bashi. |
