Question: Why did Jacob insist upon a premortem contract with Joseph for the transportation of Jacob's body to the cave of the Machpelah , at a place where his burial site would not be visited for the four hundred years of slavery in Egypt? This concept was is in contrast to the arrangement of Joseph, whose embalmed body remained in Egypt until Moses brought brought it to the land of Canaan after the exodus.

There are a few reasons given for this. First Yaakov knew that the soil of Egypt would turn to lice during the 10 plagues. Secondly,at the time of the ressurection those buried outside of Eretz Yisroel would have the pain of rolling thru tunnels to get there. Thirdly he did not want the Egyptians to make a god out of him.
Yosef did not make his children promise to bury him outside of Egypt, because he knew they would no longer have the power to do that. |
