Do you know of any source that says it was a golem? I am not aware of any.

I have never seen any midrash like that either, but Mack, you came up with a great one!  It so matches what this world is about! Man constantly acts, and by doing so, creates challenges for himself. I would go so far as to say, that Yakovs behavior to Esav, before he left for his stay with Lavan, is a very good example. Seemingly, he had no choice. Yet the Rabbis obviously see that the concequences of his actions created ripples that not only he, but we, his descendents are still dealing with. So a short answer to your question might be, because he could!
