A friend and I were discussing challenges in the gemara, and I thought I had remembered two. One was in Yerushalmi Sanhedrin regarding 49 reasons to declare the same thing tahor and tame. I thought I remembered reading another to the effect that a competent disciple should be able to find 70 reasons to declare a lizard clean. So now, of course, I cannot locate the quote, even though I have read my notes and skimmed through Talmud. Can anyone help?

In Gemora Eruvin 13b. "R' Meir had a Talmud named Sumchus who gave 48 reasons of Tuma for every Tomai thing and 48 for every Tohor thing. There was a good student in Yavne that was Metaher a Sheretz with 150 reasons."
In Sanhedrin 17a it says that you do not sit in the Sanhedrin only someone with the ability to be Metaher a Sheretz. ____________ http://limudtorah.jewishweb.org Please help the Global Yeshiva to continue spreading high quality Torah by sponsoring a Shiur in the "Understanding Mishna Brurah" forum. First, my thanks for the references. I suspect that they were, indeed, what I had remembered. I hope all had the reward of yom tov and will experience the joy of Sukkot.
I have a second question: Is anyone aware of the significance of the numbers 34, 102 and 816 either in general or with regard to Daniel in specific? Obviously, the latter two are 3 and 24 times the first figure, respectively. Is there any other implication? |
